When Was the Last Time You Used Your Own Website?
You’ve invested time and energy getting your website designed, built, and launched. Everything was tested—forms, buttons, links, layout, mobile view. It all worked perfectly.
But that was launch day!
Since then, how often have you:
- Clicked through your own site as a customer would?
- Tested a contact form or downloaded a file?
- Reviewed your homepage content or blog?
- Checked if your CTAs (calls to action) still stand out?
- Looked at your website analytics or heatmaps?
For many businesses, the answer is: not recently—or not at all.
The Website You Don’t Use Might Be Failing You
Websites aren’t static. They live in a constantly shifting ecosystem of:
- Browser updates
- Security patches
- Plugin changes
- Device variations
- Platform limitations (e.g. mobile responsiveness)
- Third-party service updates (e.g. payment gateways, forms, embeds)
Even a minor change behind the scenes can affect how your site looks or works. A broken form, an outdated link, a slow-loading page—these are things your customers might experience before you do.
What You Can Start Doing Right Now
Make it part of your business routine to use your own website like a customer:
- Click your CTAs – Do they still take users where they should?
- Submit a form – Is it working? Are you receiving notifications?
- Open your site on your phone – How does it feel? Load time? Text size?
- Try making a purchase or booking – Is the process smooth and intuitive?
- Review your homepage and key landing pages – Is the content still relevant?
- Check your analytics – Are people bouncing from key pages? What’s working?
Don’t Wait for a Client to Tell You It’s Broken
If you're not actively reviewing and using your site, chances are you won’t know something’s wrong until a client tells you—or worse, just disappears without saying a word.
Taking 10–15 minutes each month to explore your site from the customer’s point of view can save you from missed opportunities, lost sales, or damaged credibility.
